The Haslemere Society Spring Meeting, held at Haslemere Hall on Friday 7th April
The Chairman, Mrs Jane Stopford – Russell opened the meeting by updating the members on projects to which the Society had recently contributed. These included the latest details of the Railway Partnership with the hope that some members would volunteer to help in the newly opened Station Information Centre Shop which is under the auspices of The Visitor Information Centre which is based in the Museum.
Details were also given of various developments in the area to which THS had either constructively supported or objected. John Greer and David Smith were both thanked for the enormous amount of time they gave to considering each application and passing on the relevant comments to Waverley Borough Council.
Mrs Stopford – Russell ended her address by stating that THS had a very healthy membership of 500+ members and that Residents both old and new were always welcome to join THS. Especially welcome were those who were newly retired and who had an interest in our lovely town and who might be able to offer their time to serve on THS committee.
Mrs Stopford – Russell then introduced the speaker for the evening – Mr Robin Stannard who is an authority on the life and work of the local architect Mr Hugh Thackery – Turner (1853-1937). Mr Stannard illustrated his talk with many wonderful slides that brought back many memories to those present who had been raised in the Guildford area. However, his influence had been most widely felt as a leading Arts and Craft architect generally seeking the preservation of buildings and landscapes.
The Chairman, after thanking Mr Stannard for his most interesting talk, invited members to a glass or two of wine and a plentiful supply of canapes before going home. These were much enjoyed and were a very pleasant end to a good meeting.
