15th November 2024 AGM @ Haslemere Hall: details to follow
A visit to the ruins of Waverley Abbey on 25th September 2024
Waverley Abbey was the home to the first UK Cistercian Monks in c1128. Much of the original Abbey is in ruins but the outline and main walls still stand in a serene and beautiful landscape adjacent to the River Wey just outside Tilford.
Chris Harrison (Chair) started with a short history to the attending members who occupied most of the Café patio in sunshine before a walk around the grounds. The weather was forecast as “terrible” but the sun shone and rain remained abated. |
The outing to Fishbourne Palace took place on 13th August 2024. The visit included a guided tour followed by lunch and the waterside stroll on the South Coast.

What do these two images have in common? To find out, come and listen to a talk by Mick Bradford immediately after the formal part of the AGM and stay for drinks and canapes afterwards. Mick explains the background in his own words below.
The Last Flight Of The Night Stalker (Unravelling the mystery) My name is Mick Bradford. I have lived in the Haslemere area for the last 62 years. I am perhaps best known for being a sales technician at Taylor & Roberts Ltd in West Street where I worked for 42 years. I was also a photographer for the Herald series newspapers and others for about 20 years (somehow, I managed to do two jobs at the same time!). I have also made a few appearances over the years with the Haslemere Thespians. In 2012, after 70 years of trading, Taylor & Roberts closed its doors for the last time, and I found myself both redundant and retired. At five minutes to six in the afternoon of the 22nd September 1942, an audience in the Rex Cinema, Shottermill, was watching an Abbot & Costello film, ‘Ride ‘em Cowboy’, when an aircraft's engine came crashing through the roof, showering patrons with burning fuel and debris. Eleven people needed hospital treatment, but mercifully no one was killed. Outside, a broken fuselage containing the bodies of three young airmen lay crumpled and smoking across the Hindhead Road. Over the ensuing years I wondered why there was no information about such a significant incident in the town's history. People mentioned it from time to time and occasional letters appeared in the Haslemere Herald, but it was clear that no one seemed to know very much about the story at all. I resolved that one day, when I had the time, I would try to unravel the mysteries of this crash, and if possible, set about providing a memorial for the men, whose names and unit were, at that stage, unknown to me. They must have had families; loved ones; sweethearts, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how their young lives had come to a sudden and violent end here in our town. These feelings were to haunt me, on and off, for many years. My retirement suddenly had given me time, so it seemed I was fated to begin the unravelling process I had resolved to do. I started with a completely blank sheet. All I knew for certain was where it took place and that it was a Douglas Boston with three men on board; I had only a rough idea of the date! Now, ten years on, I have established a memorial, found relatives for all the men and feel I know just about everything it is possible to know about it. Come and join us to hear more of this fascinating story. Haslemere Society Outing to Watercress Line - July 2022
Wednesday in July saw a capacity trip to the Watercress line in Hampshire. Although the steam was not permissible due to the fire risk on trackside crops this did not dampen the day at all. The trip commenced in Alton and the members enjoyed an exclusive carriage on the train to Alresford. Gareth lead the walk around the village ponds to finish in the Pub for lunch then a nostalgic trip back to Alton.

May 2021 : HASLEMERE Society donates a tree in West Street.
THE HASLEMERE Society has donated a tree, planted at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and West Street, with a special find prompting a search for potential information. The Robinia pseudoacacia was donated after a former tree – a cherry tree donated back in 2008 – developed a rot in its trunk and collapsed during a storm in the winter of 2019. The Haslemere Society has stepped back in, deciding it would be best to buy a mature specimen to give the tree a chance to thrive, and for the ground to be carefully prepared to ensure a long life. After consultation, it was decided a cherry tree should again be planted on the site, and the search was on for a landscape specialist to give the tree the best possible start. Award-winning Liphook based arboricultural and tree care specialists Transform Landscapes stepped up and offered to donate their services to the town. Christopher Ashton- Jones of Haslemere-based royal warrant holders Sheen Botanical Labels Ltd completed the package by providing an elegant plaque, recording everybody’s contribution, and of course the Latin name for the chosen tree: “Prunus Kanzan”. Oliver Seabright of eponymous local butchers has agreed to keep an eye on the tree and water it as needed. When installing the plaque, it was discovered the brass plaque for the original cherry tree was underneath the 2008 plaque, and that the earlier tree had been “planted July 1977 by the visitors from West Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A. in honour of H.M. the Queen’s Silver Jubilee”.
